A safe space to level up your memoir or autobiographical writing (January – March 2025)
A writing critique group
That doesn’t make you want to join a witness protection program.
Program Overview
Writing is deeply personal, especially when it’s rooted in our lived experiences. This trauma-informed memoir writing circle is designed to provide a supportive, growth-oriented environment for writers to refine their craft, share their stories, and receive empowering feedback.
Whether you’re looking to strengthen your memoir, essay, or other autobiographical writing, this circle offers the structure, tools, and community you need to grow as a writer while honoring the sensitive nature of sharing personal stories.
NOTE: This is a “critique group.” Participation involves sharing writing with the group and giving and receiving constructive feedback. More details on this below.
What this is…
A writing critique group that meets biweekly on Tuesday afternoons for the first quarter of 2025. Participants sign up for dates to submit their writing three times during the duration of the program and give feedback on others’ work. A trauma-informed, strengths-based feedback form is used to guide feedback towards what is most useful and constructive for each writer.
Who is this for?
This writing circle is for intermediate and advanced writers who are serious about improving their craft. Whether you’ve been published or plan to seek publication, this program is for you if:
- You want constructive feedback to sharpen your writing in a safe and supportive environment.
- You’re open to giving and receiving honest, strengths-based critique to help yourself and others grow.
- You’re writing memoirs, personal essays, or other autobiographical pieces.
No prior critique experience is required—just a willingness to learn and contribute.

Trauma-inFormed Memoir Writing Circle
About the Facilitator
Hi, I’m Nicole.
I’m a published author, certified trauma-informed coach, and experienced writing teacher with over a decade of experience supporting writers. My writing weaves together memoir, theology, and history (get a taste of my work in my books or published essays here, here, or here). My coaching practice focuses on helping creatives navigate the sensitive, personal aspects of their writing journey.
I’ve taught writing courses to adults through St Basil’s Writers’ Workshop as well as nonfiction writing skills to undergraduates. I’ve also worked with writers and other creatives in a variety of settings including workshops, talks, and group coaching programs. I use a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to help creatives embrace their creative potential with confidence and wisdom.
Why I Created This Program
I know firsthand how isolating and overwhelming the writing process can feel—especially when feedback is harsh or unmoderated. This circle is my way of creating the kind of safe, empowering space I wish I’d had earlier in my journey.

FAQ
What kinds of writing can I submit?
This group focuses on memoir and autobiographical writing. You’re welcome to share essays, blog drafts, chapter excerpts, or even rough snippets. Feedback on poetry is possible, but it likely won’t emphasize technical or poetic conventions.
Do my submissions need to be polished?
Not necessarily. While polished drafts often lead to more specific feedback, rough drafts are welcome too. Just let the group know the stage of your piece so they can tailor their feedback accordingly.
What if I can’t make every session?
If you know in advance that you’ll miss one or two sessions, that’s fine! Just plan your feedback commitments and submissions accordingly. You’ll still be responsible for reading and critiquing the agreed-upon number of pieces, even if it means catching up during weeks you’re present.
How will the privacy of my writing be protected?
We take privacy seriously. Submissions are shared via a secure folder, deleted after critique, and never discussed outside the group. Participants are reminded to delete files from their devices, and recordings are available only to writers being critiqued before they are deleted.
What happens if a participant doesn’t follow through?
This group operates on trust and mutual respect. During the intro session, we’ll discuss expectations and how to handle challenges. We aim for a two-strike policy that’s firm but understanding—life happens, and we’re here to work through it together.
Can I still join if I’m new to critique groups?
Absolutely! This circle is open to anyone with an open mind and a commitment to helping others grow through constructive, respectful feedback.
